How do I loc my hair?

There are several techniques which can be used to lock hair. Single strand, double strand, and triple strand twists are the most common ways but palm rolling and comb twists are other ways to lock hair as well.

 

What is the best way to convert from permed to natural hair?

Dependant upon the health and condition of your hair there are several recommendations of styling which can be used while transitioning from permed to natural hair. The best way is to wear braids, weaves, extensions or if you prefer, cut all relaxed hair and wear a short afro.

 

How often should I trim my ends?

Typically, hair should be trimmed every 6 to 8 weeks.

 

How often should I wash my hair?
Natural hair should be washed and conditioned daily in the warmer months and a minimum of 1 to 2 weeks in the cooler months.

 

Terms Used for Natural Hair

Natural Hair - hair that has not been chemically altered in any way.
Kinky Hair - tightly coiled hair.
Afro - rounded hair extending out from the head like a halo or cloud.
Dreadlocks - hair that has not been combed or brushed and has grown intertwined with itself. It has a look of pure wool.

Twist - to interlock or interlace: to wind together (one or more parts of hair) to produce a single strand.

Braid - to intertwine hair three or more strands, strips or length of hair in an overlapping pattern.
Lock - to become entagled; interlock.
Cornrows - narrow french braids running parallel to each other alsong the scalp.
Coiling - a series of gathering and winding hair in a spiral pattern.

 

Hair Care Tips

  • Natural hair must be moisturized daily.
  • Natural hair that has been colored should be shampooed with a neutralizing shampoo, moisturizing shampoo, and then conditioned.
  • Never use a heavy wax or pomade on natural hair or locs as it causes build-up.
  • Moisturizing sprays are perfect for natural hair.
  • Hair must still be shampooed when beginning the locking process.
  • Never leave braids in more than 2 months or the hair will begin to lock.
  • If you are wearing microbraids, they must be professionally removed.
  • Twists can be worn no longer than 3 to 6 weeks or else the hair will begin to lock.
  • If you are on medication please be sure to inform your stylist.
